CHARACTER NAME: Ilda
CANON:The Queens of Apodeia The Queens of Gold and Sunlight (Original)
TIMELINE: early in the novel, after her sister's illness becomes terminal, and after she's spent some time in Aifaran/
khuioduan
AGE: 18
REFERENCE: Apodeia is a small queendom located somewhere in present-day Russia, but in what is essentially post-apocalyptic Earth. It is unknown how many years (centuries? millennia?) it has been exactly since that last, devastating world war, but it's been long enough for nature to reclaim and restore the planet. By then Earth's technological level has slipped back to the 17th century, although some fields are more advanced than others.
Apodeia is best known for its unique process of royal succession. The queens of Apodeia are not born into royalty; rather, they are chosen through a religious ceremony called the Gleaning. All girls from ages 13 to 19 are eligible, but the final 12 candidates are selected via lottery. The finalists are then taken to the Citadel, a castle out on the sea from which the queen rules, and for 16 days, they undergo training and a series of challenges to prove themselves worthy of the crown. By sundown on the last day, the emergent queen is blessed with a special power — usually in answer to her heart’s desire — which is different for every queen and often becomes the hallmark of her rule. Because of all the mystery and magic surrounding the Gleaning, the reigning queen is worshiped and treated like a goddess.
Ilda is from Mellifera, a remote fishing village located in one of Apodeia's western islands. She lives with her parents Halli and Brynja, her twin brother Ivarr, and her younger sister Ingride. She works as a shopkeeper, selling her father and brother's daily catch, as well as the fish products and fishing-related items her mother and sister make at home.
Unlike most girls her age, Ilda is rather indifferent to the idea of possibly becoming queen, and has a poor (often blasphemous, to her twin's chagrin) opinion of the Gleaning and the queen in general. She thinks the queen is distant, uncaring and could certainly do better — after all, she only comes out of the Citadel once a year, during the annual festival, and despite all her power, she hadn't been able to heal Ingride, who has been sick for years.
PERSONALITY: She is primarily described as charming and perky. She smiles a lot, she laughs a lot, and while she's quick to get angry or upset, she's just as quick to forgive, move on and revert to her sunshiny self. She also gets excited easily, even by the smallest things — fluffy animals, flowers, pretty dresses, her shy twin managing to talk to a girl, cute guys — and doesn't hold back from expressing that enthusiasm. She can get loud and annoying, but it's usually balanced out by her endearing nature.
She likes to have fun, and with her spontaneity and creativity, she's able to come up of all sorts of activities to keep herself occupied. She somehow manages to rope others into her random, occasionally embarrassing schemes; it doesn't always end well for her or her unsuspecting accomplices, and she's had friends avoiding her after such incidents. She doesn't seem to mind, though, and she'll even dare to try again, unless she's sternly and repeatedly told off.
She is warm, personable and makes friends with ease. When in a group, she goes out of her way to make everyone feel welcome, as she herself dislikes the feeling of being left out. She has a talent for getting people to talk, and because she's highly curious and loves hearing others' stories (especially when adventure is involved), she isn't shy to ask questions, even to those she'd only just met. She enjoys both small talk and deep, meaningful conversations that resonate on a personal level, but try debating with her or bringing up "serious, boring" subjects like politics and religion, and her eyes will surely glaze over.
Despite her wide circle of friends, she is actually closest to her family. She is fiercely protective and will pretty much do anything for her loved ones; nobody messes with her family but her, and if you make that mistake, you're going to have made her your enemy for life. She takes her role as the eldest child very seriously, even if she sometimes acts like half her age. In fact, she could have left town to pursue her dreams of adventure and experience the curiosities of the world, but she didn't, and she's never really complained about it (except that Mellifera is too laidback and boring). She's a dutiful daughter and a loving sister, and she goes at great lengths and efforts to be selfless, caring and supportive, usually to the point that she forgets to take care of herself.
But behind her cheerful disposition are several issues that she struggles with. One is her idealism. She normally doesn't worry a lot, as she's the type who lives in the present moment, but she has a particularly strong sense of duty and justice, and she gets worked up when it's challenged. She's highly critical of Apodeia's reigning queen for this reason, but she can only speak about her sentiments in whispers, and only to her twin brother, as she could otherwise get arrested and executed. There are times when she considers doing what's needful herself, which leads to her next issue... her short attention span. She's great at hatching ideas and starting things, especially involving other people, but she has trouble with routine, administrative tasks, and pretty much just getting things done. It's not that she lacks talent or drive; she simply tends to get distracted by the next shiny thing that catches her attention (boys included). She's also quite impatient, and she would rather rush into the thick of things than waste valuable time planning and strategizing. Lastly, people don't often take her seriously, but she does have a serious side — and she doesn't know how to deal with it when it surfaces. When brought to the point of desperation, she becomes unusually driven and focused, determined to achieve her desired end no matter the cost. (In the novel, she cheats her way into the Gleaning, desperate to obtain the power to save her sister.)
ABILITIES: She is generally athletic. She has some skill in unarmed combat; her father's taught her a few things, mostly for self-defense. Because of her exposure to artisanal fishing, she's a strong swimmer, and she can cast nets and handle a small traditional fishing boat.
She can be quite charming and persuasive, which is often attributed to her being a people-person as well as her years of experience in trading. It is, however, actually a special power resulting from her heritage, although she's unaware of it. She certainly hasn't used it for anything major, just mostly to persuade people to buy her wares, to get her new friends to open up, or to convince someone that she's telling the truth...
(She has a permissions/opt-out post here for that persuasive ability.)
PERSONAL EFFECTS:
→ a necklace that was crafted and given to her by her siblings as a birthday present
→ handfuls of square copper Aifaran coins, called rhinn, roughly equivalent to $5
→ a crumpled, worn poster ofYato some dude
PRIZED POSSESSION: The necklace from her siblings.
CRAU PREMISE: Ilda is a transplant from
khuioduan, which was set primarily in the coastal city of Aifaran, a city built atop a continent turtle; she believed she'd been brought in by a storm, and referred to the place as Magical Turtle City. Influenced by the three Planes of Life, Death and Dreaming, those of them who arrived from different worlds — called Dreamfolk by the locals — found strange little tattoos on their bodies, related to the various Talents they suddenly possessed. She was never fully able to explore her Talent, but she could cause small tremors, which had led to accidents on occasion. The notion that anyone could have magic had intrigued her, as in her world, only the queen held such power.
One of the most significant things she learned while in the city was technology. She became rather obsessed with selfies, and she even wanted to become the queen of Xa Xa, Aifaran's equivalent to Instagram. Because she kept spamming the network — accidentally or otherwise — she was called a digital menace by some of the other characters, though her antics were harmless for the most part. (She was a TikToker before it was cool.)
She also developed an interesting friendship with Yato, a god from Japan, despite her attitude towards deities and religion in general. Yes, the same girl who accidentally started a church riot, persuading inspiring random passersby to help her tear down a temple (though under the influence of paranoia-inducing space parasites), also spent a lot of her time in Aifaran assisting Yato in marketing his wish-granting business, wanting to help him raise funds to build a shrine as she learned that he would disappear forever if he didn't have any worshippers.
And while in her novel she would eventually decide to cheat her way into the Gleaning, in the game the idea was first sparked by Yato, who'd once teased her about aiming to be queen, and later reinforced by a fortune-teller named Tolunai, who'd given her a reading during the game's fourth wall event that basically said she would have to do what others won't do if she's to save her sister.
